How Much Are Airbnb Fees on a Cabo Vacation Rental?

The short answer

Airbnb charges travelers a service fee of 14-16% on Cabo vacation rentals, added at checkout on top of the nightly rate, as of 2026. On a week-long stay you will typically see $200-$400 in fees added before you confirm. VRBO charges travelers 6-12% on the same type of booking. When you book directly with the property owner, there is no traveler service fee at all.

What the Airbnb Fee Actually Looks Like on a Cabo Booking

The Airbnb traveler service fee is a percentage-based charge that Airbnb adds to your total before you confirm. In Cabo San Lucas, that fee runs 14-16% of the rental subtotal, as of 2026. It is calculated on the nightly rate plus any cleaning fee or other owner-set charges, then added on top.

Most travelers do not see this fee until they click through to the checkout page. The nightly rate shown on the search results does not include it.

Here is what that means in practice. Say the listed nightly rate is $250 and you book for 7 nights. Your rental subtotal is $1,750. Airbnb's 14-16% fee adds another $245 to $280. You also pay the cleaning fee and applicable taxes on top of that. A stay that looked like $1,750 ends up costing $2,100 or more at confirmation.

That $245-$280 in platform fees goes to Airbnb. It does not improve the condo. It does not go to the owner. It pays for the platform to sit in the middle of the transaction.

VRBO Fees: Lower, But Still Real

VRBO takes a smaller cut from travelers than Airbnb does. The VRBO traveler service fee runs 6-12%, as of 2026. On that same $1,750 rental subtotal, that is an extra $105 to $210.

So VRBO is meaningfully cheaper than Airbnb from the traveler's side. But you are still paying a platform fee that does nothing for your actual vacation experience.

Neither platform discloses these fees prominently on the search page. Both add them at checkout. If you are comparing properties across platforms, always click through to the final checkout screen before deciding.

Why Owners Still List on Platforms

If platform fees add cost for travelers, why do owners list there at all?

The fee structure is split. Airbnb collects roughly 3% from the host and 14-16% from the traveler. So the owner's cost is small, and the exposure that comes from being on a major platform fills more calendar weeks. It is a trade-off that makes sense for many owners, especially when starting out.

But established owners with direct booking systems often find that a significant share of their guests prefer to book direct once they know the option exists. The traveler saves on fees. The owner keeps more of each booking. Nobody loses anything except the platform.

What Happens When You Book Direct

When you book directly with the property owner, there is no traveler service fee. You pay the nightly rental rate and applicable taxes, and that is the total. There is no percentage charge added by a middleman at checkout.

Direct booking also means you are talking to the person who manages the property, not a platform support team. If you have a question about which unit is the best fit for your group, or you want to ask about availability around a specific date, you get a real answer from someone who knows the condos.

At Terrasol Elite, we use a secure booking engine for reservations. Pricing is transparent. What we quote is what you pay.

Our Properties: 8 Beachfront Condos at Terrasol Beach Resort

We manage 8 beachfront condos inside Terrasol Beach Resort on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas. Playa Grande is on one side, Grand Solmar is on the other. The Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal is steps away on the same Pacific beach.

We have units sized for couples and units sized for families. Honeymoon studios, multi-bedroom residences, ocean-view terraces. All are direct-book with no platform fee.

If you have booked through Airbnb or VRBO in the past and paid the traveler service fee, you already know what that cost feels like. Booking direct means that money stays with your trip instead.

How to Spot Platform Fees Before You Commit

A few habits will help you avoid checkout-page surprises on any platform:

Click through to the checkout screen. Both Airbnb and VRBO show the full fee breakdown only after you select dates and request to book. Always do this before comparing options.

Look at the "total before taxes" line. The nightly rate displayed on the listing page is not the fee-inclusive rate. The checkout screen will show a line for the traveler service fee separately.

Search for a direct booking option. Many owners in Cabo have their own booking pages or phone lines. A quick search for the property name plus "book direct" often surfaces the owner's website. If you find one, compare the total with what the platform quoted.

Ask the owner. If you message an owner on a platform and ask whether they have a direct booking option, many will tell you. Platform terms vary on how owners can respond, but it is always worth asking.
