Cabo San Lucas Sport Fishing Guide: Charters, Seasons, and What to Expect

The short answer

Cabo San Lucas is one of the best sport fishing destinations in the world, sitting right where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez. Charters leave daily from Cabo Marina, roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive from Terrasol Beach Resort. Marlin season runs May through November, dorado peaks in summer, and yellowfin tuna bite most of the year. You don't need any experience to book a trip, most boats supply gear, bait, and a crew that does the work for you.

Why Cabo Is Called the Marlin Capital of the World

The name comes from the water itself. Cabo sits at the tip of the Baja peninsula, where a deep underwater canyon runs close to shore. That drop-off pulls big game fish close to land, so boats don't need to travel far to find them. Striped marlin, blue marlin, and black marlin all pass through these waters, along with sailfish, dorado (mahi mahi), yellowfin tuna, and wahoo depending on the month.

Best Time of Year for Sport Fishing in Cabo

Striped marlin: present most of the year, with the heaviest numbers from November through May.

Blue and black marlin: best from June through November, when the water warms up.

Dorado: peaks in summer, roughly June through October.

Yellowfin tuna: caught year-round, with bigger schools showing up in the summer months.

Wahoo: strongest from late fall into winter.

If you're planning a trip around a specific fish, book with a local charter that tracks the current bite. Conditions shift year to year, and the crew running the boat every day will know more than any calendar.

Half-Day vs Full-Day Charters

Most operators offer two options.

Half-day charters run about 4 to 5 hours and usually stay closer to shore. These are a good fit if you're traveling with kids, don't want to lose a whole day of your trip, or just want a taste of it without committing to an early morning and a long afternoon.

Full-day charters run 8 hours or more and head further out to reach deeper water where the bigger marlin and tuna hold. If landing a marlin is the goal, a full-day trip gives you better odds.

Boats range in size from smaller pangas that hold two to four anglers to larger cruisers that fit six or more. Smaller boats tend to be less expensive and more personal, larger boats offer more comfort and space for a group.

What to Bring on a Fishing Charter

- Reef-safe sunscreen, applied before you board

- A hat and sunglasses with a strap, the water gets choppy

- Motion sickness medication if you're at all prone to it, taken the night before or first thing in the morning

- Light, breathable layers, mornings on the water can be cool before the sun is fully up

- Cash for tipping the crew, which is customary and appreciated

- A cooler if you plan on keeping and cooking your catch

Many charters will clean and bag your fish at the dock, and some restaurants in town will cook your catch for you the same day if you ask.

Staying at Terrasol Makes the Morning Easy

Charters typically leave early, often before 7am to beat the wind. Staying at Terrasol Beach Resort puts you a short drive from Cabo Marina, so you're not fighting traffic from a hotel further out in the Corridor. Terrasol sits on the Pacific side of Cabo, with Playa Grande on one side and Grand Solmar on the other, and the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal steps away on the same beach. Grab coffee, load up the car, and you can be at the marina with time to spare.
