Where the Water Sports Actually Happen
Cabo San Lucas has two very different coastlines, and knowing which is which matters before you book anything.
Terrasol Beach Resort sits on the Pacific side, next to Playa Grande and Grand Solmar, steps away on the same Pacific beach as the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal. The Pacific side has real surf and a strong undertow. It's not a swimming beach, and it's not where jet ski or snorkel operators set up shop. It's the beach for sunset walks, whale watching in season, and the view.
Medano Beach, on the Sea of Cortez side near the marina, is calm, shallow, and lined with the outfitters who run jet skis, parasailing, banana boats, and snorkel trips. It's about a 10 to 15 minute drive or taxi ride from Terrasol. Nearly every water sports operator in Cabo works out of Medano or the marina next to it.
Takeaway: stay on the Pacific side for the view and the quiet, head to Medano for the actual water sports.
Snorkeling and Diving
The best snorkeling near Cabo is around Lover's Beach (Playa del Amor) and Santa Maria Bay, both accessible by water taxi from the marina. The water there is clearer and calmer than anywhere along the Pacific side, and it's where most snorkel tours drop anchor.
Scuba diving is bigger business further out, especially around Cabo Pulmo, roughly a 90-minute drive north, which is a protected marine park with one of the healthiest reef systems in the region. Closer in, Land's End itself has dive sites for anyone who doesn't want the drive.
Takeaway: for a half-day trip, Lover's Beach and Santa Maria Bay cover snorkeling. For serious diving, Cabo Pulmo is worth the drive.
Jet Skis, Parasailing, and Banana Boats
These are the activities that define Medano Beach. Jet ski rentals typically run as guided tours out toward El Arco and back, since riding solo past the marker buoys isn't allowed. Parasailing operators fly out over the bay with views back toward Land's End. Banana boats and towable tubes are the family-friendly option and run right off the sand.
All of these are booked same-day, walk-up, directly on Medano Beach. There's no need to reserve in advance except during the busiest holiday weeks (Thanksgiving, Christmas week, and Spring Break).
Takeaway: show up at Medano, compare a couple of operators on the beach, and negotiate. Prices aren't fixed the way a resort activities desk would be.
Glass-Bottom Boats and Trips to El Arco
El Arco, the rock arch at Land's End where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, is the single most-photographed spot in Cabo and most people see it from the water. Glass-bottom boats and small charter boats run from the marina out to the arch, past Lover's Beach and Neptune's Finger, with sea lion colonies visible along the rocks most of the year.
These trips run 45 minutes to an hour round-trip and are one of the lowest-effort ways to see the highlights of the coastline without a full-day charter.
Takeaway: a glass-bottom boat to El Arco is the easiest way to see Cabo's coastline from the water in under an hour.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding and Kayaking
Medano Beach's calm water also makes it the spot for paddleboard and kayak rentals, either self-guided close to shore or as a guided sunrise tour before the beach gets busy. This is the lowest-key option on this list, no motor, no crowd, and works well for anyone traveling with kids old enough to paddle.
Takeaway: paddleboarding at sunrise on Medano is the quietest water activity on this list.
When to Go
Water is calmest and clearest from May through October, though this overlaps with the hotter, more humid stretch of the year and the tail end of hurricane season (which runs through November, though direct hits on Cabo are uncommon). Winter months, especially January through March, bring whale watching season and slightly cooler water, still swimmable but less glassy for snorkeling visibility.
