Best Snorkeling Spots in Cabo San Lucas

The short answer

The best snorkeling in Cabo San Lucas is at Chileno Bay and Santa Maria Bay, both federally protected coves on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula with calm, clear water and reef fish close to shore. Pelican Rock near Land's End is the closest option if you want snorkeling and a boat ride to see the Arch in the same trip. All three are day-trip distance from Terrasol Beach Resort, on the Pacific side of Cabo, so plan on a short drive or a tour pickup rather than walking straight in from your condo.

Why Chileno Bay Is the Top Pick

Chileno Bay sits about 10 minutes east of the marina, on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula. It's a protected marine reserve, so the water is calm most of the year and visibility is good even for beginners and kids. Sea turtles, angelfish, and parrotfish are common right off the sand, no boat needed.

Takeaway: If you only snorkel once during your trip, do it at Chileno Bay in the morning before the wind picks up.

Santa Maria Bay: The Quieter Alternative

One bay further east from Chileno, Santa Maria has the same protected status and similarly calm water, with fewer crowds. It's a horseshoe-shaped cove, which cuts down on current and makes it easy to swim out to the reef edge and back.

Takeaway: Go to Santa Maria if Chileno's parking lot is full or you want more room to spread out.

Pelican Rock and Land's End

Pelican Rock sits right at the tip of the peninsula near El Arco, on the transition point between the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. Most people reach it by water taxi or panga from the marina rather than by car. The appeal here is combining snorkeling with sightseeing: sea lions haul out on the rocks nearby, and you get a close look at the Arch and Lover's Beach on the same outing.

Takeaway: Book a water taxi or small tour if you want snorkeling and the Arch in one trip instead of two.

Why the Pacific Side, Where Terrasol Sits, Isn't the Spot

Terrasol Beach Resort sits on the Pacific side of Cabo, with Playa Grande on one side and Grand Solmar on the other, steps away on the same Pacific beach as the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal. The Pacific side has bigger surf and stronger currents, which makes for great sunsets and beach walks but poor snorkeling visibility compared to the sheltered Sea of Cortez bays. For a deeper look at how the two coastlines differ, see our guide on the [Pacific side vs. the Sea of Cortez side](/blog/pacific-vs-sea-of-cortez-cabo).

Takeaway: Enjoy the Pacific side for the beach and the view, then drive over to the Sea of Cortez side for the actual snorkeling.

Gear and Timing Tips

Most snorkel tours and rental shops in the marina and along the Sea of Cortez bays supply masks, fins, and vests, so you don't need to pack your own unless you prefer your own fit. Morning trips, before 11 a.m., generally have calmer water and better visibility than afternoon, when wind picks up on both coasts. Contact us or your tour operator for current pricing and availability, since rates and hours change seasonally.

Takeaway: Book morning tours when you can, and confirm gear is included before you show up.

Where to Stay for Easy Access

Staying at Terrasol puts you on the Pacific side, an easy 15 to 20 minute drive to Chileno Bay or Santa Maria Bay, and close to the marina for water-taxi trips to Pelican Rock. Our [beachfront condos](/rentals) put you within reach of both coastlines without committing to a hotel on either specific bay.
